Arkhangelsk is the oldest city of the Russian North. It is located on the European part of Russia at the mouth of the Northern Dvina River, 30 km from the White Sea. Arkhangelsk is an important sea and river port, railway junction.

Arkhangelsk was founded in 1584 by Ivan the Terrible. Firstly Arkhangelsk was built as a fortress to protect against the possible Sweden attack, the threat that existed at that time. By the end of XVI century Arkhangelsk became an important center of Russian foreign trade and the city began to develop and build up actively. The port became the city center. It was the only port at that time in Russia.

Peter I had the great interest in Arkhangelsk. In 1693 he arrived in Arkhangelsk to explore the shipbuilding industry and study special aspects of sea trading business. Later he ordered to build in Arkhangelsk the first Russian State shipyard, which was named the Arkhangelsk Admiralty.

Later “Northern Shipping Company” was founded in Arkhangelsk – the first in Russia. The city was also the base for the Arctic region exploration. Right here the first Russian icebreaking appeared.

You are always welcome to visit the capital of Pomorland - Arkhangelsk –a modest, original and hospitable northern town.
